Longitudinal Fairness with Censorship

نویسندگان

چکیده

Recent works in artificial intelligence fairness attempt to mitigate discrimination by proposing constrained optimization programs that achieve parity for some statistic. Most assume availability of the class label, which is impractical many real-world applications such as precision medicine, actuarial analysis and recidivism prediction. Here we consider longitudinal right-censored environments, where time event might be unknown, resulting censorship label inapplicability existing studies. We devise applicable measures, propose a debiasing algorithm, provide necessary theoretical constructs bridge with without these important socially-sensitive tasks. Our experiments on four censored datasets confirm utility our approach.

Exploring the Design Space of Longitudinal Censorship Measurement Platforms

Despite the high perceived value and increasing severity of online information controls, a data-driven understanding of the phenomenon has remained elusive. In this paper, we consider two design points in the space of Internet censorship measurement with particular emphasis on how they address the challenges of locating vantage points, choosing content to test, and analyzing results. We discuss...

Monitoring Internet Censorship with UBICA

Censorship is becoming increasingly pervasive on the Internet, with the Open Net Initiative reporting nearly 50 countries practicing some form of censorship. Previous work has reported the existence of many forms of Internet censorship (e.g., DNS tampering, packet filtering, connection reset, content filtering), each of which may be composed to build a more comprehensive censorship system. Auto...

Censorship and Two Types of Self-Censorship∗†

We propose and defend a distinction between two types of self-censorship: public and private. In public self-censorship, individuals restrain their expressive attitudes in response to public censors. In private self-censorship, individuals do so in the absence of public censorship. We argue for this distinction by introducing a general model which allows us to identify, describe, and compare a ...

Selection fairness information and applicant reactions: a longitudinal field study.

Although laboratory studies have found that selection information can affect applicant perceptions, this has not been tested in the field. The authors followed 2 cohorts of police applicants (N = 274) in a longitudinal study to examine the relationship between information, applicant perceptions, and behavior (e.g., turnover). Information was related to perceived fairness measured at the time of...

Evading Censorship with Browser-Based Proxies

While Internet access to certain sites is blocked in some parts of the world, these restrictions are often circumvented using proxies outside the censored region. Often these proxies are blocked as soon as they are discovered. In this paper we propose a browser-based proxy creation system that generates a large number of short-lived proxies. Clients using the system seamlessly hop from one prox...
